TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - United States President Donald Trump has warned Iran not to charge ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz. He emphasized that if such practice is indeed taking place, Tehran must stop it immediately.
In a post on Truth Social on Thursday, Trump responded to reports of levies imposed on tanker ships.
"There are reports that Iran is charging fees to tankers going through the Hormuz Strait — They better not be and, if they are, they better stop now!" he wrote.
On the same day, Trump again criticized Iran through a separate post.
"Iran is doing a very poor job, dishonorable some would say, of allowing oil to go through the Strait of Hormuz. That is not the agreement we have!" he said.
Pressure in the Strait of Hormuz
According to a report by Axios, a U.S. official stated that the Strait of Hormuz is technically open. However, ships are not crossing it because they feel intimidated by Iran.
Iran has threatened and coerced all parties involved, according to the official. He added that the U.S. government is considering steps to encourage ships to resume crossing the route.
Sultan Al Jaber, the Head of the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company, stated that the condition in the Strait of Hormuz is not completely open. In a LinkedIn post, he wrote that access to the route is now "restricted, conditioned, and controlled," and depends on Iran's political interests and permissions.
Hundreds of oil and vital commodities tanker ships are still waiting to cross the Strait of Hormuz. Ship operators and captains are uncertain about how to cross without risking attacks. The International Maritime Organization recorded nearly 20,000 sailors detained in the Persian Gulf region due to this situation.
Iran's Statements and Negotiation Direction
As reported by Anadolu, Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Seyyed Mojtaba Hosseini Khamenei stated that the management of the Strait of Hormuz will enter a "new phase." He emphasized that Iran will demand accountability for all damages resulting from the conflict.
"We will certainly not leave the criminal aggressors who attacked our country unpunished," he said. He added that Iran will demand compensation for all damages, as well as the blood of martyrs and the injured.
Khamenei also warned that Iran is ready to respond to any potential further aggression. "Our hands are on the trigger," he said, emphasizing that any mistakes by the opposing party will be met with a firm response.
These statements emerged ahead of planned negotiations between Iran and the U.S. mediated by Pakistan. According to Iran's statement, the talks scheduled to start on Saturday aim to finalize the details of a potential agreement, but do not mark the end of the conflict.
