TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Student demonstrations will be held in Jakarta on Monday, June 15, 2026. One of the groups involved is the Student Executive Board of Bung Karno University, or BEM UBK. They will hold a rally under the theme "Tata Ulang Indonesia" (Reshape Indonesia) at 10:00 a.m. at the State Palace, Jakarta.
BEM UBK is raising six demands. These include urging the government to temporarily suspend and evaluate both the free nutritious meal (MBG) program and the Red and White Village Cooperatives, alongside calls to review the Police Law, end militarism, and uphold civilian supremacy.
Furthermore, the student body is pressing the administration to take strategic measures to stabilize the rupiah and bolster national economic resilience. They are also demanding inclusive, high-quality, and affordable education for all Indonesians, while calling for a critical review of recent fuel price hikes that have burdened the public.
M. Abdi Maludin, Chairperson of the BEM Faculty of Law at UBK, explained that the "Tata Ulang Indonesia" movement was forged during a consolidation of UBK student organizations on Saturday, June 13, 2026. According to Abdi, internal reviews suggest the nation is currently in a state of decline—a sentiment echoed by emerging discourses on "Reformation 2.0" and protests demanding an end to the MBG.
"We initiated this consolidation because all indicators suggest the country must rise from its current slump," Abdi told Tempo on Sunday, June 14, 2026.
However, Abdi emphasized that BEM UBK is not looking to replicate the upheaval of the 1998 protests. He stressed that the movement seeks to keep Indonesia united despite the current hardships. "We do not want Indonesia to be divided by provocation; as students and citizens, we must anticipate and prevent that," he said.
Abdi estimates that approximately 200 students from UBK will participate in tomorrow’s rally. That number could swell if other institutions join the cause; Abdi noted that student boards from Pamulang University (Unpam) and Muhammadiyah University of Jakarta (UMJ) have expressed interest. "They are currently consolidating, and we expect their final decision once their internal deliberations are complete," said the man who will also serve as the field coordinator for tomorrow's action.
