TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – The United States and Iran have agreed to extend a ceasefire by 60 days under the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding, with the current truce set to expire on August 17, Pakistani government sources told Anadolu on Wednesday.
“Both sides have conveyed their consent to the mediators to extend the deadline,” a source close to the mediation process said.
However, the two sides are still exchanging messages to determine the precise duration of the extension, the source said.
The United States and Iran agreed to a Pakistan-brokered ceasefire in April before signing the Islamabad memorandum on June 17, which paved the way for negotiations toward a final agreement.
The talks later stalled over disagreements regarding security guarantees and freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most strategically important routes for global energy supplies and trade.
US-Iran Conflict Resumes
The ceasefire came under renewed strain between July 8 and July 24, when the United States and Iran exchanged military strikes.
Washington launched attacks against targets inside Iran, while Tehran retaliated by targeting US military facilities and equipment in several Arab countries, including Jordan, Bahrain and Kuwait.
The Strait of Hormuz has remained a major point of contention in the negotiations because of its importance to global energy shipments and maritime trade.
The latest agreement to extend the ceasefire could provide the two sides with additional time to resolve their remaining differences and resume negotiations toward a longer-term settlement.
