TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The US State Department announced on Monday, August 10, 2026, that they will pledge US$15.5 million in emergency aid for Colombia following a magnitude 7.4 earthquake that killed at least 111 people and damaged hundreds of buildings.
“Following the devastating magnitude 7.4 earthquake that struck parts of Colombia today, the Trump administration is committed to providing US$15.5 million for emergency shelter, food, protection, and damage assessments,” the State Department said in a post on the social media platform X.
“We stand in prayer with the people of Colombia and are ready to support President Abelardo de la Espriella and his administration as they assess needs on the ground,” the department added.
Separately, US State Department Spokesperson Tommy Pigott stated on X that the department is “actively assisting” US citizens affected by the earthquake.
He also urged U.S. citizens in Colombia to contact the US Embassy in Bogota for consular assistance.
According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake struck near San Jose del Palmar in the Choco region—approximately 400 kilometers (249 miles) west of the Colombian capital, Bogota—at a depth of about 107 kilometers (66 miles).
At least 111 people were killed and 87 others injured. Meanwhile, Colombian authorities reported that around 1,600 buildings sustained damage, with at least 61 structures collapsing.
