TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Amnesty International Indonesia condemns the assault by a member of the Indonesian National Police's Mobile Brigade (Brimob), Second Brigadier (Bripda) MS, against a student named Arianto Tawakal. Bripda MS allegedly killed a 14-year-old kid by beating him with a steel helmet.
Amnesty International Indonesia Executive Director Usman Hamid stated that the assault on Arianto constituted an extrajudicial killing by a police officer. "And it is a gross violation of human rights," Usman said in a written statement on Saturday, February 21, 2026.
Usman said the police's move to link Arianto to illegal street racing undermined public trust. According to Usman, a similar pattern occurred in the murder of Gamma Rizkynata Oktavandy. A student was shot dead by a member of the Central Java Regional Police, Second Brigadier Robig Zaenudin, on Jalan Candi Penataran Raya, Semarang City. "Their cover-up of the truth only further undermines public trust in the police," he said.
Bripda MS, a member of the Mobile Brigade Corps (Brimob) of Company I, Battalion C Pelopor, was allegedly monitoring illegal street racing when AT passed by on a motorcycle on Thursday morning, February 19, 2026. Bripda MS allegedly hit the victim with his helmet, throwing him from the motorcycle. The victim was taken to Karel Sadsuitubun Regional Hospital. However, he died while receiving treatment.
The Head of Public Relations for the Maluku Regional Police, Senior Commissioner Rositah Umasugi, stated that Bripda MS has been detained at the Tual Police detention center since Thursday, February 19, 2026. "He is being held to be held accountable for his actions according to the applicable legal process," Rositah said in a written statement quoted on Saturday, February 21, 2026.
According to Rositah, Bripda MS will undergo criminal and ethical procedures. Rositah stated that if proven guilty, Bripda MS could face a dishonorable discharge (PTDH).
