TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The death toll in the joint Israel-US strike on a girls' school in Iran has risen to at least 51 people, as reported by the government news agency IRNA on Saturday, February 28, 2026, as cited by NBC News.

The special governor of Minab County stated that at least 51 people were killed and at least 60 others were injured in the attack, which reportedly targeted a girls' elementary school, according to the Mehr news agency.

The semi-official news agency Tasnim also reported the attack, mentioning the initial death toll to be more than 20 people. The attack is suspected to have been targeted at an IRGC military base located near the school.

Two US officials told NBC News that Israel had targeted Iranian leaders while the US had targeted Iran's ballistic and nuclear missile program.

In response to the attack on its territory, Iran launched attacks on northern Israel and several Gulf countries hosting US military bases. This has sparked the worst concerns in the region, with the likelihood of the Middle East being engulfed in prolonged war becoming increasingly real.

Strikes on Gulf Countries

At least one person was killed in Abu Dhabi, the United Arab Emirates said on Saturday, while other US allies in the region, including Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, and Jordan, reported Iranian missile attacks in their territories.

The powerful Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) stated on television address that it had targeted the major headquarters of the US Fifth Fleet in Bahrain, other US bases in Qatar and the UAE, as well as military and security centers.

No casualties were reported from Iran's retaliatory attacks on these US military facilities, two US officials told NBC News on Saturday morning. The officials said there was infrastructure damage in Bahrain after Iran attacked the Fifth Fleet, but it is not yet clear whether the damage occurred inside or outside the base.

The Kuwaiti Ministry of Defense stated that Ali Al-Salem Air Base was targeted by a number of ballistic missiles, all of which were successfully intercepted by Kuwait's air defense system.

"Ali Al-Salem Air Base came under attack by a number of ballistic missiles. This morning, the Kuwaiti Air Defense Force successfully intercepted them, resulting in fragments and debris from the interception operation falling in the vicinity of the base," said ministry spokesperson Colonel Staff Saud Abdulaziz al-Otaibi in a statement as reported by Al Jazeera.

A military source in the Jordanian Armed Forces General Command told NBC News that two Iranian ballistic missiles were shot down, while the Qatari Ministry of Defense said it intercepted a third wave of attacks.

The US Embassy in Jerusalem urged government employees and their families to seek shelter until further notice.

Prior to the attacks, Iran had vowed to retaliate against any strikes, threatening to target both Israel and American bases in the region.
