TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Benito Antonio Martnez Ocasio, also known as Bad Bunny, is set to star in a feature film. The Puerto Rican superstar has been officially selected as the lead actor for the film Porto Rico, a historical drama directed by his fellow countryman, rapper, and activist, Residente. The film presents Puerto Rico's history in a way that has never been done before, featuring a cast of major Hollywood actors.
This project will mark Bad Bunny's first leading role in a feature film, following his appearances in several major titles such as Bullet Train, Happy Gilmore 2, and Caught Stealing. He recently made history in the global music scene by winning three Grammy Awards and performing in the Super Bowl LV Halftime Show.
Epic Historical Narrative and Hollywood Collaboration
According to Deadline, Porto Rico is envisioned as a combination of historical narrative and epic drama, based on the real struggles at the end of the 19th century, including the complex colonial and nationalist conflicts of Puerto Rico. Residente collaborated with Alexander Dinelaris on the script, the Oscar-winning writer known for Birdman. The project also involves prominent names behind the scenes, including Alejandro G. Inarritu as an executive producer.
Bad Bunny will stand in the midst of this historically rich narrative, marking a significant shift from cameo appearances to a leading role. Apart from Bad Bunny, the film will also feature renowned actors such as Edward Norton, Javier Bardem, and Viggo Mortensen in strong supporting roles. Norton is even involved as a producer for Class 5 Films, as reported by Variety.
In his statement, Norton described Porto Rico as a film that "falls within the tradition of films that we truly love", akin to classics like The Godfather or Gangs of New York. This indicates the film's ambition to present a narrative that is not only dramatically compelling but also rich in history. Porto Rico is claimed to be more than just a typical historical drama; it is designed as a reflection of Puerto Rico's culture and identity, which, according to the director, has been a lifelong dream.
From the Grammy Stage to the Silver Screen
The announcement of Bad Bunny as the lead actor of Porto Rico comes at a significant juncture in his career. He has just performed at the Super Bowl LX Halftime Show, garnering global attention, and has achieved several prestigious music awards. This moment marks his transition from an internationally renowned musician to a multitalented figure venturing into film with a significant role.
Although details about the production are scarce, the collaboration between Bad Bunny and Residente in Porto Rico has been a major headline in the entertainment world. This film is noteworthy not only because of the prominent names involved but also because of its leaked storyline, which aims to explore the history and identity of a nation in an intense and meaningful way.
In his statement, Norton revealed that "And bringing him (Residente) and Bad Bunny together to tell the true story of Puerto Rico’s roots is going to be like a flame finding the stick of dynamite that’s been waiting for it."
Deadline in its report also highlights the common ground that strengthens the epic collaboration between Residente and Bad Bunny, despite their generational gap. "They’re kindred spirits in their love of country, community, and their passion to protect both through activism," stated the media outlet.
