TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) forecasts rain across major cities in Indonesia, to varying intensity, on Saturday, May 16, 2026.
"For western Indonesia, beware of thunderstorm potential in Palembang, Banjarmasin, and Samarinda," said BMKG forecaster Afif in a weather forecast broadcast in Jakarta on Saturday.
Besides thunderstorms, the weather agency also forecasts lighter rain in other major cities across western Indonesia.
The forecaster further noted potential for moderate rain in Medan, Palangkaraya, and Tanjung Selor.
Meanwhile, drizzly weather is expected to dominate most other western regions and the island of Java.
"Furthermore, there is potential for light rain in Padang, Pekanbaru, Tanjung Pinang, Pangkalpinang, Bandar Lampung, all of Java, and Pontianak," the forecaster added.
Not only is there potential for rain, but residents of Banda Aceh are also expected to see thick clouds looming in the skies today. In other parts of Sumatra, BMKG has announced the potential for hazy air, particularly in Jambi and Bengkulu.
Turning to eastern Indonesia, the weather agency also urges vigilance for the potential for rain and thunderstorms in Manado and Jayawijaya.
"Then there is the potential for moderate rain in Mamuju, Gorontalo, and Ternate," the BMKG forecaster said, outlining the weather conditions for the eastern region.
BMKG detailed several cities in the central and eastern regions that are likely to experience light rain, including Denpasar, Mataram, Kupang, Makassar, Kendari, Palu, Ambon, Sorong, Manokwari, Nabire, Jayapura, and Merauke.
