TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Understanding the global cost of living has become a vital priority for every household navigating the shifting economic landscape of 2026. This remains true whether you are a citizen or an immigrant searching for a place to reside.

While inflation has technically slowed, the reality of an inflation hangover means many families still feel as though they are simply treading water against high prices. This index serves not only as financial data but also provides the necessary framework and considerations for your future decisions.

What Metrics Determine These Rankings?

A cost-of-living index tracks essential expenses like food, shelter, and healthcare to measure how prices vary across different countries. It reveals how these need-based cost shifts depend on where you choose to live or move. Since no official government index exists, most organizations use a 100-point scale to help people calculate their actual purchasing power

By setting a baseline city like New York at 100, the index reveals the relative value of your income in other locations. The comparison explains why $100 buys significantly more in a place like Singapore than in Bermuda. Ultimately, the index proves that a high salary in an expensive city does not always guarantee a better standard of living than an average income elsewhere.

Countries with the Highest Cost of Living in 2026

The 2026 rankings are dominated by isolated island territories and global financial centers that rely heavily on imported goods. These locations face high costs due to limited space and high demand for basic services. These figures highlight the global peak of living expenses where daily life requires a significant premium.

Here are the top 10 countries with the highest cost of living in 2026, according to Numbeo:

  1. Bermuda (135.8)

  2. Cayman Islands (115.6)

  3. U.S. Virgin Islands (111.3)

  4. Switzerland (110.7)

  5. Solomon Islands (102.3)

  6. Bahamas (98.8)

  7. Iceland (97.2)

  8. Jersey (88.7)

  9. Singapore (87.7)

  10. Norway (83.7)

Within the landscape, the United States holds the 19th position globally with an index score of 56.3. This ranking indicates that living expenses in the country remain well above the average baseline. Even though inflation has slowed in many regions, the cost of housing and food remains a major challenge across different continents.

A recent Bloomberg analysis highlights a problem in the United States where grocery prices have surged into 31% while restaurant costs have climbed to 35% since 2020. Although average weekly pay has risen to 31% over the last six years, the gains have been largely neutralised by the increasing price of basic necessities. This reality is that high salaries in expensive nations do not always guarantee an improved standard of living in the modern era.
