TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Destry Damayanti, the candidate for the Governor of Bank Indonesia, said the government must work with the monetary authority to face turbulent circumstances. Nevertheless, the collaboration does not automatically compromise the independence of Bank Indonesia.
Bearing this in mind, Destry said during the fit and proper test at the House of Representatives (DPR) Commission XI that she raises the vision and mission of "Sinergi Merah Putih untuk Kesejahteraan Rakyat Indonesia" (Red and White Synergy for the Welfare of the Indonesian People).
The aforementioned synergy, she said, will not erode the credibility and independence of the central bank. "We will continue to maintain independence as mandated by the latest P2SK Law," she said on Wednesday, referring to the Law on Development and Strengthening of the Financial Sector.
According to Destry, the complex problems faced by the nation cannot be resolved by individual institutions, as each has their own strengths, which necessitates unity. "We must unite our strengths, as each has complementary weapons," she said.
During her presentation, Destry explained that if she becomes the Governor of Bank Indonesia, she wants the central bank to be adaptive and innovative in supporting stability, growth, and sustainability.
Destry explained that Indonesia is still faced with global challenges such as geopolitical risks, economic slowdown, vulnerable financial markets, increasing inflation, capital flow volatility, and digitalization risks.
However, several macroeconomic indicators in Indonesia remain strong due to a stable inflation rate and rupiah exchange rate, sustained external resilience, a stable financial system, and domestic economic growth. "These are the positive effects of government policy stimulus and Bank Indonesia's policy mix," she said.
To address the existing challenges, Destry also presented five missions for the central bank under her leadership in the future. First, Bank Indonesia will strengthen the policy mix to maintain rupiah stability and encourage growth.
Second, optimize data management and maintain economic sovereignty by regulating foreign exchange traffic. Third, create inclusive, sustainable, and sharia-compliant finance. Fourth, strengthen credibility and accelerate digital innovation towards institutional governance. Fifth, enhance coordination towards a more advanced and higher quality Indonesia.
According to Destry, the Bank Indonesia policy mix is aimed at creating a conducive economic climate. "Maintaining price stability as the main prerequisite for creating national self-sufficiency as the spirit of Asta Cita," she said.
