TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A fire broke out in the server room of Istiqlal Mosque in Central Jakarta on Wednesday night, February 18, 2026. The fire was suspected to have originated from the Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) unit located under the electrical panel in the room.
The initial report was received by the Istiqlal Fire Department at around 8:40 PM. When the officers arrived at the scene, they found the room filled with thick smoke. There was still a point of fire burning at the bottom of the panel.
"When we arrived, the room was filled with smoke, but there was still one point of fire burning at the bottom. We extinguished it using the portable fire extinguisher," said Ramdan.
According to Ramdan, the fire was not too big. However, the thick smoke prevented the officers from entering the room without respiratory protective equipment. They used full protective gear and a self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) to put out the fire.
The handling of the situation was quick. According to Ramdan, the fire was successfully extinguished about five minutes after the officers arrived at the scene, around 8:45 PM. Then, the officers removed the smoke from the room.
During the incident, the upper floor of the server room was still hosting the tarawih prayer. The worshippers seemed unaware of the fire, so it did not disrupt the tarawih prayer.
The on-duty officer of the Central Jakarta Fire and Rescue Service (Gulkarmat), Agus Sya'ban, confirmed that the fire did not spread to other rooms. He emphasized that only the server room was affected.
Twenty firefighters and four fire trucks were deployed to the location. The proximity of the fire station to the Istiqlal complex was said to have helped expedite the response time, preventing the fire from spreading.
The exact cause of the fire is still under investigation. The officers suspected that the fire originated from the UPS unit, which provided backup power during voltage drops. However, the technical cause will be handled by the further investigative team.
Currently, the situation at the location is reported to be safe, and all the smoke has been cleared from the room. There were no reports of casualties in the incident.
