TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has recorded heavy to extreme rainfall in the Greater Jakarta area from Thursday night to Friday morning on February 19-20, 2026.

This condition has triggered floods in several residential areas and road sections. Reports of rising river discharge have also emerged. Based on data from the Jakarta Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) until 09:00 AM local time, floods have affected 90 neighborhoods and six road sections in Jakarta.

According to the Acting Deputy of Meteorology BMKG, Andri Ramdhani, measurements of rainfall over 24 hours from Thursday morning to Friday morning showed high figures at several points. For example, at Halim Perdanakusuma, East Jakarta, 179 mm was recorded, and at Atang Sanjaya, Bogor Regency, 168 mm was recorded. "With a relatively long duration of rain events, lasting from night until morning," he said when contacted on Friday, February 20, 2026.

Rainfall figures exceeding 150 mm per day are classified as extreme. Meanwhile, in several other regions in Indonesia, light to moderate rainfall has also been observed. BMKG also noted heavy rainfall (50-100 mm per day) occurred in North Sulawesi at 80.8 mm per day, West Java at 78.9 mm per day, and Riau Islands at 55.0 mm per day.

This increase in rainfall, Andri explained, is influenced by the strengthening of the Asian Monsoon, which brings strong westerly winds that accelerate the growth of convective clouds. "Especially in the western and southern regions of Indonesia," he said.

The Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) activity, which is currently located in western Indonesia or the Indian Ocean, is also said to contribute to the increased rainfall in Sumatra, the western part of Java, Kalimantan, and the northern part of Sulawesi. BMKG estimates that this atmospheric phenomenon will continue to significantly impact national weather conditions in the coming week.

Andri mentioned the potential for increased heavy rainfall in Aceh, North Sumatra, West Sumatra, Riau Islands, Jambi, South Sumatra, Bangka Belitung Islands, Bengkulu, Lampung, Jakarta, West Java, Central Kalimantan, East Kalimantan, North Kalimantan, South Kalimantan, Gorontalo, Central Sulawesi, South Sulawesi, Southeast Sulawesi, Maluku, Southwest Papua, West Papua, Central Papua, and South Papua.

Meanwhile, the potential for heavy to very heavy rainfall in the coming week is expected to occur in Banten, DI Yogyakarta, Central Java, East Java, Bali, West Nusa Tenggara, East Nusa Tenggara, West Kalimantan, North Sulawesi, West Sulawesi, North Maluku, and Papua Highlands.

Andri stated that the BMKG will continue to closely monitor the development of atmospheric dynamics. "And will provide weather information and early warnings periodically to support the preparedness of the community and local governments."
