TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - How much did the fire that struck Sade Village in West Nusa Tenggara cost Indonesia’s tourism sector? Tourism Minister Widiyanti Putri Wardhana said the losses have reached Rp33.84 billion (US$2.03 million).
The fire, which broke out on August 22, affected 320 people from 189 families, including local tour guides, traditional weavers, souvenir vendors, artists, parking attendants, security personnel, and members of the Tourism Awareness Group, known as Pokdarwis.
“These include local guides, traditional weavers, souvenir sellers, artists, parking managers, security personnel, and Pokdarwis,” Widiyanti said during a working meeting with House of Representatives Commission VII at the parliament complex in Jakarta on Monday, August 31, 2026.
According to Widiyanti, those affected include five local tour guides, 120 traditional weavers, 60 souvenir sellers and micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), 30 dancers and traditional drummers, 15 parking and security personnel, and 20 Pokdarwis members.
The fire also destroyed 75 residential units in Sade Village, while another 20 homes outside the village were affected.
Several communal structures were also damaged, including four berugak sekenam and six berugak sakepat, traditional meeting spaces, as well as one bale beleq, a traditional communal building.
Other facilities destroyed in the fire included eight rice barns, a public toilet, an entrance gate, a pelonggu, and a traditional mosque. A total of 69 souvenir shops were also burned.
Government Prepares Recovery Programs
The government has prepared short-term measures to support the recovery of the traditional village, including distributing food supplies and setting up a public kitchen.
The measures will also include community and tourism-sector assistance, such as trauma counseling, technical training, and programs to strengthen Pokdarwis groups.
For the longer term, the government plans to establish an inter-ministerial and interagency team, set up a centralized donation account, draw up a reconstruction plan, and build permanent housing for affected residents.
Widiyanti said the Tourism Ministry had conducted a direct assessment of the disaster site. The ministry has also collected donations from its employees to support the recovery efforts.
