TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The United States Department of War (DOW) on Monday local time announced the launch of ChatGPT Mil, an artificial intelligence (AI) model for secure use in military environments.
“The Department of War today launched OpenAI's ChatGPT Mil, marking it as the next frontier AI capability housed on GenAI.mil, the Department's premier generative AI platform,” the DOW said in a press release, as quoted on Tuesday, September 1, 2026.
The DOW said the launch represents the adoption phase of a partnership between the Department of War and OpenAI that was formed in 2025.
ChatGPT Mil has obtained authorization to handle Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI) at Impact Level 5 (IL5). The department emphasized that the model is designed for secure and consistent use.
“This deployment accelerates routine tasks and frees up time for more critical projects across the Joint Force,” the statement read.
The department said the integration of ChatGPT Mil into GenAI.mil, along with other advanced AI capabilities, forms a multi-model AI ecosystem to support military personnel.
In a separate press release, the DOW also announced the initial launch of Starshield AI’s Grok.
The Pentagon said Starshield AI's Grok for Government received the same CUI and IL5 authorizations as ChatGPT Mil.
"Starshield AI's Grok for Government enables the Joint Force to execute missions faster and with greater precision across numerous operational contexts," the DOW said.
According to the department, its uses range from market research analysis for procurement personnel to supply chain management for logistics officers.
The Pentagon plans to continue expanding the use of next-generation AI as a "force multiplier" across the United States Joint Force.
