TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Advocacy Team for Democracy (TAUD) highlighted allegations of excessive use of violence, targeted sweeps, mobilization of specific groups, and alleged arbitrary arrests by the police while handling the protest on August 27, 2026. The Coordinator of the Commission for the Disappeared and Victims of Violence (KontraS), Dimas Bagus Arya, revealed that a total of 387 people were arrested during the series of actions that began in front of the parliament complex.
"Consisting of 64 people arrested before the protest started on August 27, either on August 26 or before the rally kicked off at 10:00 a.m. local time on August 27, and 322 people were arrested during the protest," Dimas said in a press conference at the KontraS Office, Central Jakarta, on Monday, August 31, 2026.
Of the total 387 people arrested, TAUD recorded that 22 people suffered injuries and one elderly person named Bambang Setiawan, 59, died. Bambang was a mirror seller who died after being assaulted by a mysterious mob that appeared after the August 27 protest subsided.
Monitoring results from TAUD revealed that the majority of the injured victims suffered bruises, stab wounds, cuts, cigarette burns, even broken bones, and burns from tear gas canisters.
Besides the aforementioned number, Dimas revealed his side received 11 reports of missing persons after the protest, reported by friends, relatives, or family members, for more than 24 hours during the series of demonstrations.
After data collection and verification, these 11 people were found at Jakarta Metro Police, with 6 people already released and 5 people still in detention. KontraS noted that the police not only arrested people at the protest site but also on several rally routes from buffer areas to Jakarta.
In this case, the police conducted sweeping, as well as blockades and efforts to prevent protesters from moving forward, which were considered a deprivation of the freedom to express opinions in public. The organization urged the police to immediately release all victims of violence and arbitrary arrests who are still detained. "Also ensure recovery and non-repetition guarantees," he said.
Earlier, the Jakarta Metro Police established 48 suspects linked to the riot that broke out after the protest at the parliament complex on Thursday. The 48 individuals were part of the total 322 people arrested by the police. Most of them have been questioned.
"At this time, the Jakarta Metro Police have questioned 315 people," said the Director of General Crime Investigation of the Jakarta Metro Police, Chief Commissioner Iman Imanuddin, at a press conference on Friday, August 28, 2026.
Police divided the arrested individuals into five clusters: those who are under 18 years old, the general rioters, those suspected of damaging public facilities or committing acts of violence, the cluster suspected of carrying sharp weapons, and the cluster of instigators and financiers.
The police are also looking into those suspected of exploiting children to carry out illegal activities.
