TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX) has cautioned novice investors, particularly Generation Z, against buying stocks simply to follow trends or recommendations circulating on social media. High interest in investment among young people must be balanced with a proper understanding of risks and market conditions.
Head of the IDX Representative Office for Central Java 2, Solo Raya, and Madiun Raya, M. Wira Adibrata, said the Fear of Missing Out (FOMO) phenomenon must be anticipated by novice investors. According to him, investment decisions should not rely on stocks that are being widely discussed or promoted by influencers.
"We highly appreciate Gen Z's strong interest in digital platforms. However, we hope they do not just buy stocks because they are tempted by social media promotions, which may not necessarily be true," Wira said during the IDX Regional Journalist Workshop at New Rivermoon, Klaten, on Wednesday, August 26, 2026.
Wira stressed that investors need to understand the instruments they purchase and rely on measured information before making transactions. Analyzing price movements, transaction volumes, and company fundamentals can serve as solid considerations so investment decisions are not based purely on speculation.
The warning comes amid rising capital market activity in the Greater Solo region. The IDX noted that the value of capital market transactions in Greater Solo reached Rp26 trillion from January to May 2026, excluding Klaten Regency. The monthly average transaction now stands at around Rp5 trillion, up from the previous average of about Rp3 trillion per month.
This transaction growth aligns with an increasing number of investors, including Gen-Z members who rely heavily on digital investment platforms. In Surakarta, the IDX recorded around 89,000 capital market investors as of May 2026, with roughly 48,000 holding stock instruments.
The IDX is also expanding capital market literacy through Investment Galleries. Currently, 50 Investment Galleries operate across the Solo Raya region, up from 46 locations previously.
Four new galleries were established in collaboration and became operational this year, located at RSU PKU Muhammadiyah, Sugeng Hartono University, SMA Negeri 2 Sukoharjo, and SMK Negeri 1 Sragen. The IDX is also preparing to open galleries at SMA Negeri 5 Surakarta and SMK Negeri Jatiroto Wonogiri.
According to Wira, capital market education in schools and universities is crucial so young people learn financial management and investment from an early age. These efforts are also expected to steer young people toward healthier financial habits amid the rise of illegal online investment and gambling offers.
"We continue to target young people, Gen Z, and university campuses because that is where discussions about long-term planning should begin," he said.
Regarding recent stock market corrections, Wira urged the public not to rush into linking index movements to a specific issue. He noted that stock price movements are shaped by many factors, ranging from economic policies and political conditions to various market sentiments. "Many factors affect stock movements, including policies, political dynamics, and other sentiments," he said.
