TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Donald Trump announced on Saturday, May 10, 2025, that India and Pakistan have agreed to a ceasefire, following negotiations mediated by the United States. This came after Pakistan fired missiles at a military location in India in response to India's airstrike.
Trump, who announced on Truth Social as reported by Sky News, stated that India and Pakistan have agreed to a "full and immediate" ceasefire after a US-mediated "long night of talks."
The US president lauded both countries for using "common sense and great intelligence."
Although the timing of the announcement was unexpected, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio had been in regular phone calls with Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Indian Foreign Minister since late April.
Rubio has tweeted on X to confirm the ceasefire between India and Pakistan.
He stated that he had engaged with senior officials from India and Pakistan alongside Vice President JD Vance for the past 48 hours, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Shehbaz Sharif.
"I am pleased to announce the governments of India and Pakistan have agreed to an immediate ceasefire and to start talks on a broad set of issues at a neutral site," he wrote.
"We commend prime ministers Modi and Sharif on their wisdom, prudence, and statesmanship in choosing the path of peace."
India confirmed the ceasefire after receiving a call from the Pakistani military director. The country's foreign minister stated that the ceasefire started at 5 p.m. in India.
Foreign Minister Vikram Misri added that the Pakistani director general of military operations called this afternoon, and it was agreed that both sides would stop all firing.
He also mentioned that there would be further talks between India and Pakistan on Monday, May 12.
Citing Sky News, Pakistani Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar told Geo News that the ceasefire is not partial, but instead a full-fledged agreement between the two countries.
Trump had expressed earlier this week that the escalating tensions were embarrassing, and he wanted it to stop.
