TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia has called for de-escalation and urged the ASEAN bloc to strengthen regional coordination and resilience in the wake of the US-Israel war on Iran, said Foreign Affairs Ministry spokesperson Yvonne Mewengkang.

Speaking at a ministry press briefing on Friday, Yvonne said Foreign Minister Sugiono delivered Indonesia's stance during the ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting video conference on Friday, chaired by the Philippine Foreign Minister.

Yvonne noted that the meeting specifically addressed how the evolving situation in the Middle East affects ASEAN.

Foreign Minister Sugiono, she said, urged cooperation, evacuation, and consular assistance for citizens of ASEAN member states in areas affected by the Middle East war.

“The Indonesian Foreign Minister also mentioned various communication efforts by the president with relevant countries to discuss the importance of de-escalation and how Indonesia can contribute to advancing dialogue and de-escalation in the region,” said Yvonne, as quoted from Antara.

The Foreign Ministry spokesperson also emphasized that all ASEAN member states are advocating for de-escalation of Middle East conflict and discussing measures to address the impacts of the US-Israel war on Iran.

Citing the asean.org website, the Special ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting on the Situation in the Middle East was held on Friday via video conference and chaired by Philippine Foreign Minister Theresa P. Lazaro.

The meeting discussed the evolving situation in the Middle East and its impact on regional stability, the global economic situation, and energy security.

According to the website, the ministers underscored the importance of assisting ASEAN citizens in affected areas and "strengthening ASEAN’s ongoing initiatives to enhance regional energy cooperation and supply resilience."
