TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Kemlu) has said that the government, through its embassy in Tehran, is intensively engaging in diplomatic efforts with Iranian authorities to ensure the safe passage of Indonesian ships through the strategic Strait of Hormuz.
Spokesperson Yvonne Mewengkang conveyed this during a media briefing at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Jakarta on Friday, as reported by Antara.
“Our ambassador in Tehran continues to communicate with the Iranian government and relevant authorities on this matter. We will continue to push for intensified diplomatic approaches regarding this issue because it is crucial for us,” Yvonne said.
The Strait of Hormuz was effectively closed by Iran following attacks by the United States and Israel on February 28, 2026. The closure has contributed to a rise in global oil prices.
Another Ministry spokesperson, Nabyl A. Mulachela, said that with the election of Iran’s new supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, Indonesia hopes for the creation of peace.
“Our hope is that our focus can be on pushing for the immediate creation of peace,” Nabyl said. He added that the Indonesian government is working to balance various efforts to achieve de-escalation in the Middle East.
“Whatever is produced, the goal is for de-escalation, conflict reduction, and a return to diplomatic channels,” he said, affirming that Indonesia continues to strive for the realization of its national interests.
The February 28 attacks by the United States and Israel killed Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, hundreds of schoolgirls, and senior Iranian officials. In response, Iran targeted U.S. military assets across the region and effectively blocked the Strait of Hormuz.
On Wednesday, the UN Security Council adopted Resolution 2817, condemning Iran’s attacks on neighboring countries amid escalating violence in the Middle East. The Council strongly condemned attacks on Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Jordan, reaffirming support for their sovereignty and territorial integrity.
The resolution specifically condemned strikes on civilian areas and called on Tehran to cease actions that disrupt maritime trade or support proxy groups throughout the region.
Iran, however, rejected the resolution, arguing it failed to acknowledge that the attacks were triggered by Israeli aggression, supported by the United States, which killed thousands of Iranian civilians, including 175 schoolgirls.
