Indonesia Urges BRICS to Sustain Global Peace

7 hours ago 7

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - At the BRICS Foreign Ministers' Meeting in New Delhi, India, on Thursday, May 14, Indonesian Minister of Foreign Affairs Sugiono called for BRICS, as a power in the Global South, to play an active role in maintaining global peace and stability.

"As a rising force of the Global South, BRICS has both the standing and the responsibility, to take a more active role in safeguarding peace and preserving the rules that sustain global stability," said Minister Sugiono, as quoted in an official statement received in Jakarta on Friday, May 15, 2026.

The Minister emphasized that BRICS' greatest value lies in amplifying the voices of developing countries in shaping the future global order. He reminded BRICS to always uphold international law fairly, consistently, and without double standards, as no country is above the law.

During the meeting, Minister Sugiono specifically addressed the deaths of four Indonesian peacekeepers serving with UNIFIL (the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon) and called for full accountability for those responsible.

Indonesia emphasized that the safety of UN peacekeeping personnel is a principle that must not be compromised.

Furthermore, Sugiono emphasized the importance of global governance reform to address current challenges, including reforming the global trading system to make it inclusive, open, and non-discriminatory, with the World Trade Organization (WTO) as its primary foundation.

In line with the theme of India's chairship, Indonesia welcomed the strengthening of the New Development Bank (NDB) and confirmed that it was completing its internal process for joining.

This year's BRICS is being held under India's chairmanship with the theme "Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation, and Sustainability." Indonesia is entering its second year as a BRICS member, which coincides with the 20th anniversary of BRICS' formation in 2006.

Going forward, Indonesia can utilize the BRICS forum to continue strengthening collaboration in several strategic sectors, including the economy, climate change, energy, health, and global governance reform.

Indonesia's membership in BRICS is expected to bring tangible benefits and cooperation for Indonesia, considering that BRICS represents 28-30 percent of the total Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and 45 percent of the world's population.

The BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting is the main BRICS forum at the Foreign Ministerial level and is part of the series leading up to the 18th BRICS Summit, scheduled for September 12-13, 2026, in New Delhi, India.
