TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Minister of State Secretariat Prasetyo Hadi stated that the government will invite the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) to a dialogue regarding Trump's Board of Peace. This invitation to dialogue follows the MUI's demand that President Prabowo Subianto resign from the Board of Peace, established by US President Donald Trump.
"We will have a dialogue with the MUI, and we are confident that they will provide an explanation for our decision to join this Board of Peacel," Prasetyo said when met at the Sentul International Convention Center (SICC), Bogor Regency, West Java, on Monday, February 2, 2026.
Prasetyo emphasized that joining the Board of Peace is Indonesia's way of paving the way for participation in the Palestinian peace process. He promised that the Indonesian government will speak out and fight for Palestinian independence.
"If we don't join (the Board of Peace), how can we engage in dialogue to provide input and opinions to ensure our struggle for Palestinian independence is recognized?" said the Gerindra Party politician.
Indonesia joined the Board of Peace on January 22, 2026. President Prabowo participated when the global organization was launched in Davos, Switzerland, two weeks ago. Donald Trump is the head of the body.
The Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) strongly opposes President Prabowo's decision to join the Board of Peace. MUI Deputy Chairman Cholil Nafis stated that Indonesia's decision to join the Board of Peace is not in favor of Palestine.
He stated that United States President Donald Trump initiated the international body, and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu holds a membership seat. This fact will actually complicate Palestine's pursuit of independence.
"Because among the initiators, Trump and his members, Netanyahu is clearly a colonizer, and there is no Palestinian state," said Cholil, as quoted from his statement on the MUI's official website on Friday, January 30, 2026.
Cholil also touched on another oddity related to Indonesia's involvement in the Board of Peace, namely the payment of a US$1 billion (equivalent to Rp17 trillion) fee for countries seeking permanent membership. "What's even more strange is that Indonesia is still being charged membership fees. It would be better if Mr. Prabowo just withdrew," said Cholil.
