TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - US Vice President JD Vance claimed on Wednesday that a cessation of hostilities in Lebanon was not part of the ceasefire agreement between the United States and Iran. As reported by Sputnik, he called the issue a "misunderstanding."
"I think this comes from a legitimate misunderstanding. I think the Iranians thought that the ceasefire included Lebanon, and it just didn't. We never made that promise," Vance told reporters before leaving for Hungary, as reported by Antara.
"We never indicated that was going to be the case. What we said is that the ceasefire would be focused on Iran, and… on America’s allies — both Israel and the Gulf Arab states," he said.
However, Pakistan, which acted as a mediator during the negotiations, asserted that the United States, Iran, and their allies had accepted a ceasefire "everywhere," including in Lebanon.
US President Donald Trump previously told PBS that a cessation of hostilities in Lebanon was not included in the agreement because of the involvement of the Hezbollah group. Trump considered the situation in the country part of a "separate conflict."
The Israeli military announced the start of its largest series of attacks on Hezbollah targets in Lebanon since the start of the current escalation on Wednesday. At least 354 people were killed and thousands more injured in Lebanon as a result of the brutal Israeli attacks in just one day.
Meanwhile, Iran's Tasnim news agency reported that the Islamic Republic of Iran could withdraw from its ceasefire agreement with the United States if Israel continues its attacks on Lebanon.
Similarly, the Fars news agency also reported that Tehran has suspended tanker traffic through the Strait of Hormuz following the attacks.
