TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Hospitality and service standards have become crucial factors for tourists when choosing destinations. According to the Traveller Review Awards 2026 by Booking.com, two cities in Asia, namely Magong in Taiwan and Takayama in Japan, have successfully secured spots among the top ten most welcoming cities in the world.
The award is based on more than 370 million verified reviews from global travelers. In total, 1.81 million travel partners were recognized for their dedication to providing authentic and reliable experiences. James Waters, Chief Business Officer of Booking.com, mentioned that a personal touch from locals is the key to making a trip feel truly special.
"From welcoming hosts who go above and beyond for guest stays to expert taxi drivers sharing ‘local-only’ tips, these personal touches can make a trip truly special for travellers," he said, as quoted by ITTN.
The Unique Appeal of Magong and Takayama
Magong, located along the western coast of Penghu Island, Taiwan, ranked second globally. This port city is considered a "hidden gem," offering a more peaceful atmosphere compared to other major Asian metropolises. Despite the bustle of its port activities, it harmoniously blends historical backgrounds, vibrant markets, and stunning coastal views.
Travelers highly value the warmth of the locals when visiting historical sites such as the Tianhou Temple in the Old Street night market. During their stay, travelers can also explore fishing villages and farms to enjoy fresh seafood and local drinks while experiencing the genuine hospitality of Penghu residents. The combination of cultural heritage, beautiful seascapes, and warm local hospitality in Magong offers an authentic and unforgettable vacation experience in Taiwan's islands.

Meanwhile, Takayama in Japan holds the eighth position. The city, nestled in the Hida Mountains, captivates tourists with its hospitality in the historic Sanmachi Suji district. In addition to the refined service at traditional inns, or Ryokan, the warm interactions at the Miyagawa morning market are primary reasons this city is considered exceptionally open and friendly to international tourists.
The Hida Folk Village and the nearby Shirakawa-go, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, showcase centuries-old rural architecture that adds depth to every visit. Visitors can enjoy Hida beef, served on sizzling yakiniku grills, or a soothing bowl of ramen, alongside local specialties such as grilled Hoba miso on magnolia leaves. With its blend of history, craftsmanship, and delicious cuisine, Takayama offers a warm and unforgettable traditional Japanese experience.
Rising Hospitality Trends in Asia
The report also notes significant growth across Asia, with South Korea and Japan experiencing increases of 46 and 29 percent, respectively, in the number of recognized friendly tourist partners. This trend indicates that Asian countries are increasingly prioritizing the quality of local services to attract international market interest.
