Planning a Trip with Your Pet? Here Are 8 Must-Know Tips

5 hours ago 2

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - For many pet owners, few things are more enjoyable than taking their beloved companions along on vacation. According to GlobalVetLink, 79 percent of pet owners in the United States travel with their pets each year. However, not all pets are suited for travel.

Likewise, not every destination or mode of travel is pet-friendly. Whether planning a short getaway or a long-haul flight, it’s important to assess whether bringing a pet makes sense. Here are some key factors to consider before deciding to travel with your furry friend:

1. Pet-Friendly Accommodations

Maddi Bourgerri, a travel expert at RV Share, emphasizes the importance of researching pet-friendly lodging in the area. Lauren Gumpert from Faye Travel Insurance also advises travelers to find out whether hotels or rental homes welcome animals.

“It’s always nice when hosts or your hotel also love animals. I’ve had great experiences where a hotel asks me the size of my dog in advance so they can put an appropriately sized dog bed in the room,” said Lauren, as quoted from Huffington Post.

Beyond dog beds, some accommodations go the extra mile by offering pet-sitting services, snacks, or even a special dog menu. Tammy Hunter, a veterinarian at VA Animal Hospital, notes the benefit of choosing hotels that not only allow pets but also provide dedicated amenities.

2. How Well Your Pet Will Adapt

Dog trainer and pet lifestyle expert Nicole Ellis from Rover recommends evaluating whether your pet will enjoy the destination. While some dogs prefer serene environments with nature, others thrive in more bustling urban settings.

Some pets might be happier staying at home with a sitter. Also, make sure the area offers pet-friendly spaces and activities that suit your dog’s personality.

3. Climate Conditions

Another critical factor is the weather. "Depending on the size and breed of your dog, they may not be comfortable or safe in certain climates like extreme heat or cold," explains Angela Laws, community manager at TrustedHousesitters.

4. Travel Duration

Nicole Ellis also points out that long-distance travel may cause stress for some pets. "Consider the length of your trip and how your dog handles travel, whether by car, plane or train," she said.

Extended travel can lead to anxiety, motion sickness, or exposure to illness. For short trips, weigh the pros and cons: is it worth the hassle and risk, or would your pet be better off at home with a sitter or at a boarding facility?

5. Your Pet’s Needs

Dr. Carly Fox, a veterinarian at Schwarzman Animal Medical Center, advises travelers to come prepared with vet records, an appropriate travel crate, and any necessary medications. "In addition, make sure your pet has clear identification and is microchipped," she said. In addition to emergency supplies, ensure your pet feels secure and content while away from home.

6. Transportation Accessibility

Angela Laws suggests checking whether your destination has pet-friendly transportation options, including taxis and public transit. Also, think about how you’ll get around. If many places are within walking distance, it could be ideal for both you and your pet.

7. Local Pet Policies

Before traveling, research the pet regulations at your destination. Dr. Michell Dulake, veterinarian and co-founder of Fera Pet, highlights the need to learn about leash laws and breed restrictions.

"Always check local pet policies before you go, including leash laws and breed restrictions, just in case," she said.

Some locations, like Hawaii, have stringent entry requirements for animals, while others may limit or prohibit dogs in certain areas. "If you’re heading to national parks, make sure they accept dogs," added Gumpert.

8. Access to Pet Services

Finally, Angela Laws reminds travelers to check if the area has essential pet services like veterinary clinics, pet stores, or boarding facilities. Also, consider how far these are from your accommodations in case of an emergency.
