TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Directorate of Special Crimes of the Indonesian National Police (Bareskrim Polri) will investigate parties involved in the assault against an Indonesian citizen in Selangor, Malaysia. The victim, Doris Candra, is a resident of Prabumulih, South Sumatra.
The police suspect that the assault is related to the practice of illegal tin smuggling. "We will investigate parties suspected of being involved in criminal acts of assault and illegal tin smuggling," said Irhamni, Director of Special Crimes at Bareskrim Polri when contacted on Sunday, May 17, 2026.
Irhamni stated that the assault on Doris allegedly occurred in a house in the Pantai Sepang Putra area, Tanjong Sepat, Selangor. On Saturday, May 16, 2026 at 23:18 Malaysian time, officers evacuated Doris using a multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) from a location suspected to be a homestay occupied by several individuals.
Based on initial information, Doris admitted that the perpetrators forced her to bring tin from Indonesia to Malaysia. The victim also claimed to have been persuaded to come to Malaysia before experiencing the assault.
Irhamni mentioned that Doris first met a Bugis man known as the right-hand man of the "big boss" on March 15, 2026 in Batam, Riau Islands. During the meeting, the man offered her a job related to the shipment of tin from Bangka. "The victim was offered a job to find tin in Bangka and was told that the transportation would be using the boss's ship from Malaysia," said Irhamni.
Two days after the meeting, Doris returned to Bangka. A week later, the Bugis man came with a man of Chinese descent to directly observe the tin mining activities in Bangka.
According to Irhamni, the network then entrusted Rp650 million to Doris. The money was allegedly meant to pay for the tin purchase and to buy fish before being transported using a ship from Malaysia. However, the tin delivery plan was canceled because the police were intensively conducting raids in Bangka. "The boss did not proceed with bringing the tin to Malaysia," said Irhamni.
After that, Doris was asked to obtain a passport to fly to Kuala Lumpur. Instead of being taken to meet business associates, the perpetrators took Doris to an oil palm plantation area in the forest. There, they asked Doris to return Rp10 billion.
On May 15, 2026, the perpetrators again demanded amounts of Rp250 million and Rp400 million. Unable to meet these demands, Doris claimed that the perpetrators assaulted and threatened to kill her. "They threatened to throw the victim into the sea," said Irhamni.
According to Irhamni, the perpetrators had even prepared a ship that was allegedly going to be used to execute Doris and dispose of her body at sea. Under immense pressure, Doris managed to contact someone who then reported the incident to the Indonesian Police Attach in Kuala Lumpur. Malaysian police, along with the Indonesian Police Attach, then rescued Doris on Saturday night, May 16, 2026.
Irhamni stated that Doris is currently under the supervision of the authorities. "At present, the victim is in a safe place," he said.
