TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Prabowo Subianto claims that the situation in the Gaza Strip, Palestine, has taken a turn for the better. The Palestinian territory, which borders Egypt and Israel, was previously under a sustained Israeli military assault.
Prabowo stated that the current Gaza situation surpasses recent years. He believes that the people of Gaza have now secured sufficient necessities of life.
"I think the flow of food aid, the needs of the people in Gaza, is at its highest in several years. So, there is enough food, and other needs flow abundantly," said Prabowo after attending the inaugural meeting of the Board of Peace in Washington, D.C., United States, on Thursday, February 19, 2026 local time.
Prabowo mentioned that peace efforts in the Gaza Strip will face further challenges in the future. Among them, he noted, there may be parties unwilling to cooperate to ensure peace in Gaza.
According to him, Indonesia is determined to achieve success through the Board of Peace for the Palestinian people. "Of course, we are committed; earlier, some Muslim countries reaffirmed our commitment to truly achieve lasting peace," he said.
The Chairperson of the Gerindra Party stated that the two-state solution, supported by Indonesia, must be realized. "For us, the real, the only long-lasting solution is a two-state solution," said Prabowo.
Indonesia is currently preparing approximately 8,000 Indonesian National Armed Forces troops to be dispatched to Gaza through the ISF. The ISF is planned to operate under the direction of the Board of Peace, formed by U.S. President Donald John Trump and approved by the United Nations Security Council through Resolution 2803 on November 17, 2025.
In the first meeting of the Board of Peace yesterday, President Donald Trump, in his speech, appreciated the presence of country representatives, including President Prabowo. Trump said that the countries joining the Board of Peace are not only donating money but are also willing to send personnel to maintain the ceasefire in Gaza.
Indonesia's involvement in the Board of Peace has sparked significant criticism domestically. The Indonesian Legal Aid Foundation (YLBHI) views Indonesia's membership in this U.S.-led international body as a betrayal of the spirit and values of the people who have long supported Palestine.
YLBHI questions Indonesia's plan to send thousands of troops to 'assist' the U.S. and Israel in demilitarizing Hamas in Palestine. YLBHI emphasizes that the plan sets a dangerous precedent against the rights of Palestine as a sovereign nation.
