TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto praised the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip, Palestine. He said the ceasefire has shown concrete achievements.
Prabowo expressed this at the inaugural meeting of the Board of Peace in Washington, D.C., United States. "The achievement of this ceasefire is real, and we praise it," said Prabowo, who delivered the speech in English on Thursday, February 19, 2026, local time.
Prabowo stated that Indonesia joined the Board of Peace because it believes this shadow UN organization can realize peace, especially in Palestine. According to him, from the beginning, he agreed to the 20-point plan for Gaza peace proposed by U.S. President Donald Trump, who is also the initiator of the Board of Peace.
Prabowo stated that the Board of Peace will face challenges along the way. However, he is confident that the board will be able to overcome these issues.
The Chair of the Gerindra Party hopes that the Board of Peace can provide a solution for the Palestinian people. "We will achieve our dream of peace in Palestine, a lasting and peaceful solution to the issues in Palestine and Gaza," he said.
Prabowo believes that the ceasefire in the Gaza Strip has achieved tangible results. "Therefore, we reaffirm our commitment to contribute a large number of troops, up to 8,000 or more if necessary," he said.
Prabowo mentioned that thousands of Indonesian National Army (TNI) soldiers are ready to join the peacekeeping mission in Gaza. He said the troops would be deployed to the operational area through the International Stabilization Force (ISF), alongside the militaries of other countries.
Currently, Indonesia is preparing about 8,000 TNI soldiers to be sent to the Gaza Strip, Palestine, through the ISF. The ISF is planned to operate under the direction of the Board of Peace formed by President Trump and was approved by the United Nations Security Council through Resolution 2803 on November 17, 2025.
At the first meeting of the Board of Peace held yesterday, Trump appreciated the presence of the representatives of the countries in attendance, including President Prabowo. Trump stated that the participating countries are not only contributing money but are also willing to send personnel to maintain the ceasefire in Gaza.
Trump then mentioned Indonesia as one of the countries that will send troops to Gaza. "Indonesia, thank you very much, Indonesia. This is a great country," said Trump.
Indonesia's involvement in the Board of Peace has sparked criticism. For example, the Indonesian Legal Aid Foundation (YLBHI) views the membership in this U.S.-led international body as a betrayal of the spirit and values of the Indonesian people, who have traditionally sided with Palestine.
YLBHI highlights the plan to send thousands of Indonesian soldiers to "assist" the U.S. and Israel in demilitarizing Hamas in Palestine. YLBHI emphasizes that this sets a bad precedent against the rights of Palestine as a nation.
