TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto stated that the Indonesian government respects the political process taking place in the United States (US) and is preparing anticipatory measures. This was in response to the United States Supreme Court's ruling that overturned US President Donald Trump's global tariff policy.

The ruling stated that Trump did not have the authority to impose global tariffs under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA). However, shortly afterward, Trump announced a 10 percent global import tariff.

"We are ready to face all possibilities. We respect the domestic policy of the United States. We will see how it develops," said President Prabowo in Washington, DC, United States, on Saturday, February 21, 2026, as quoted by the Presidential Media Team.

According to the Head of State, the new 10 percent tariff policy announced by Trump is still within manageable limits for Indonesia. "I think, yes, it is beneficial (a 10 percent tariff)," Prabowo said.

On a separate occasion, Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto stated that despite the US Supreme Court ruling, the Indonesian government would strive to maintain zero percent tariffs or exemption from import duties on a number of products that Prabowo and Trump had agreed to.

"Thank God, yesterday Indonesia signed the agreement, and what Indonesia requested was that all other products be subject to 10 percent tariffs, but we still request those that have already been granted zero percent," Airlangga said.

President Prabowo Subianto and United States President Donald Trump signed a reciprocal trade agreement in Washington, DC, United States, on Thursday, February 19, 2026. This signing also officially set a 19 percent tariff rate on Indonesian products in the US. The bilateral meeting between the two heads of state took place approximately 30 minutes after the Peace Council meeting.

On February 20, 2026, the United States Supreme Court ruled that Trump's trade tariff policy against many countries was unconstitutional. The court ruled that the President lacked the inherent authority to impose large-scale tariffs on any country. Hours after the ruling was issued, Trump announced the imposition of a 10 percent tariff on all countries.
