TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Directors Joe Russo and Anthony Russo, also known as the Russo Brothers, chose to rely on improvisation when producing the latest Marvel Studios film, "Avengers: Doomsday."
As reported by Variety on Wednesday, citing ANTARA, “Avengers: Doomsday” is being produced without a fully completed script. However, Joe and Anthony Russo are not worried because they see the script as a “living organism.”
"We’re improvisation-based, rehearsal-based directors. We like to see what the actors bring to the characters, and sometimes you don’t get the actors until a few days or few weeks before you shoot them. And a lot of the time, that’s when the magic happens," Joe said.
"Avengers: Doomsday" marks the Russo Brothers' return to Marvel and their first major Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) film since "Avengers: Endgame." The duo had previously had no plans to direct another "Avengers" film.
The film was originally slated to be titled "The Kang Dynasty" and feature Jonathan Majors as a new villain with a Thanos-sized threat. However, Majors was removed from Marvel amid his legal issues, forcing the fifth "Avengers" film to undergo a major overhaul.
Amid these changes, the Russo brothers reunited with Robert Downey Jr., who returned to the MCU after concluding his role as Iron Man. This time, Downey Jr. will play the villain Doctor Doom.
"The thing that Joe and I have always appreciated about our collaboration with Marvel is: Our job isn’t to answer for the entirety of the MCU. We intersect it in a very specific way. It’s that intersection which is where we can make sense of things," Anthony Russo said of their decision to return.
The film "Avengers: Doomsday" is scheduled to be released on December 18, 2026.
