TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares will demand solidarity from European Union countries regarding the ongoing migration crisis in Ceuta.
He stressed in an interview with RTVE television channel on Monday, August 3, 2026, that there is no European Union without solidarity, and those who do not accept this are working against Europe.
Albares noted that the enclave border cities of Ceuta and Melilla are not only Spain's national frontiers, but also the southern border of the European Union.
When repeated migration crises overwhelmed the Italian government in Lampedusa, he recalled, Spain consistently demonstrated solidarity, both politically and practically, and that is precisely what we expect from other European nations.
In late July, Ceuta which is an autonomous city and Spanish enclave located on the North African coast experienced a major influx of migrants arriving from neighboring Morocco.
Spain deployed additional police, Civil Guard, and military units to the area in an effort to prevent illegal border crossings.
Ceuta Mayor Juan Jesus Vivas announced on Friday, July 31, that approximately 60,000 people had entered Ceuta within a 24-hour period. The enclave's resident population currently stands at approximately 85,000.
Several European Union representatives have previously criticized Spain's migration management policies. On Friday, July 31, officials from several EU member states, including Italy, the Czech Republic, Finland, and Denmark, called for the temporary suspension of Spain's membership in the Schengen area amid the massive migrant influx from Morocco into Ceuta.
