TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian national team suffered a crushing 0-3 home defeat to Vietnam in their 2026 AFF Cup Group A clash at Pakansari Stadium, Bogor, on Monday night, August 3.
Vietnam's three goals were scored by Nguyen Van Vi and Nguyen Hai Long in the first half, with Nguyen Xuan Son adding the third after the break.
The defeat dropped Indonesia to third place in Group A, keeping them on six points from three matches. Meanwhile, Vietnam surged to the top of the standings with seven points, leading second-placed Singapore on goal difference.
Early Shock for Indonesia
Vietnam played with efficiency from the opening whistle, breaking the deadlock in the sixth minute. Nguyen Hoang Duc delivered a through ball to Nguyen Van Vi, who timed his run perfectly to beat the offside trap.
Van Vi then fired a low strike that eluded Indonesian goalkeeper Nadeo Argawinata, giving the visitors an early 1-0 lead.
Indonesia attempted to mount a response in the 12th minute. Mitchell Baker found an opening after gathering a through pass from Ivar Jenner, but his tame shot was easily saved by Vietnamese goalkeeper Patrik Le Giang.
Instead of finding an equalizer, Indonesia conceded a second goal in the 15th minute. Off a swift counterattack, Le Pham Thanh Long released a through ball to Nguyen Hai Long, who cut inside unmarked from the left flank before slotting a low shot into the bottom left corner past Nadeo. The 2-0 scoreline held until the halftime interval.
Second-Half Pressure and Crucial Final Fixture
Entering the second half, Indonesia tried to rally back. In the 58th minute, Thom Haye squandered a golden chance from close range when Le Giang denied his point-blank effort.
Six minutes later, Mitchell Baker connected with a cross from Eliano Reijnders, but his header drifted wide of the target.
Vietnam put the match beyond reach in the 71st minute. Nguyen Hoang Duc acted as playmaker once again, threading a defense-splitting through ball.
Nguyen Xuan Son broke past the offside trap before driving a low shot into the bottom right corner, well beyond Nadeo's reach.
Indonesia came close to narrowing the margin late in the game. In the 88th minute, Rizky Eka met Tim Geypens' cross with a header, but an alert Le Giang was on hand to thwart the opportunity.
The 3-0 deficit remained unchanged until the final whistle.
The result leaves Indonesia needing a win against Singapore in their final group fixture on August 7 to keep their semifinal qualification hopes alive. Anything short of three points will ensure the Garuda squad's 2026 AFF Cup journey ends in the group stage.
