Spain Strongly Rejects Any Involvement in Attacks on Iran

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez on Wednesday firmly rejected the idea of "bowing down" to military escalation in the Middle East. He continued to call for an immediate ceasefire between Israel, the United States, and Iran.

As quoted by Antara, in a video posted on X, a U.S. social media platform, Sanchez emphatically stated Spain's position was "no to war."

He said that Spain would not be "complicit" in actions that were "bad for the world" just because of a "fear of retaliation."

He condemned the Iranian regime for oppressing its citizens and stressed that one illegal act cannot be repaid with another, referring to the ongoing "unilateral" attacks by the U.S. and Israel.

Sanchez stressed that the Spanish military is working day and night to coordinate evacuation mechanisms for residents in the region.

"We have absolute confidence in the economic, institutional and I would also say moral strength of our country. In moments like this we feel prouder than ever to be Spanish," Sanchez concluded.

Tensions between the U.S. and Spain have escalated. Madrid has condemned the attacks on Iran and refused to allow Washington to use its military bases to attack Iran.

Earlier, Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares firmly rejected the idea that Spain had agreed to military cooperation with the U.S. amid ongoing U.S.-Israeli attacks on Iran and tensions over base access.

In an interview with Cadena SER radio, Albares denied the claims made by the White House.

"The Spanish government’s position on the war in the Middle East, the bombings in Iran, and the use of our bases has not changed one iota," Albares said.

The rejection came after White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt said Spain agreed to cooperate following President Donald Trump's threat to "cut off all trade" with the European ally.

Trump issued the ultimatum after Madrid prohibited the U.S. from using its bases to attack Iran.

"I think they heard the president’s message yesterday loud and clear. It is my understanding over the past several hours they’ve agreed to cooperate with the U.S. military," Leavitt said.
