TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Two flights bound for Jambi from Jakarta were diverted to Batam and Palembang due to limited visibility caused by thick haze that blanketed Jambi City in Indonesia from Sunday morning through the afternoon on August 23, 2026.
Ardon Marbun, General Manager of PT Angkasa Pura at Sultan Thaha Saifuddin Airport in Jambi, confirmed the diversion of two morning flights. According to airport reports, the haze affected two scheduled arrivals from Jakarta (CGK) to Jambi (DJB).
As reported by Antara, one of the aircraft unable to land was a Batik Air flight (ID 6804)—an Airbus A320 (PK-LAT)—piloted by Captain Kemas Muhammad Fatur. The flight was carrying 138 adults and one infant.
The aircraft was scheduled to land at 10:00 WIB (Western Indonesia Time), with an initial estimated arrival of 10:40 WIB. However, at 10:45 WIB, Air Traffic Control (ATC) informed the Apron Movement Control (AMC) team that Batik Air flight ID 6804 had to be diverted to Batam. This decision was made after visibility at Sultan Thaha Airport dropped to 1,000 meters due to the thick haze.
The second aircraft unable to land was a Super Air Jet flight (IU 842)—an Airbus A320 (PK-STZ)—traveling from Jakarta (CGK) to Jambi (DJB) with 120 adults and one child on board.
That aircraft was scheduled to land at 11:25 WIB. However, as weather conditions at the airfield had not improved, the flight was ultimately diverted to Palembang.
Ardon noted that at 09:30 WIB, visibility at Sultan Thaha Airport had still been within the safe range, at approximately 5,000 meters. However, an hour later—specifically at 10:30 WIB—visibility dropped to 1,000 meters. These conditions persisted until 11:30 WIB. Airport authorities confirmed that visibility has since returned to normal at 3,500 meters.
A Garuda Indonesia flight from Jakarta bound for Jambi successfully landed at 13:44 WIB. Meanwhile, two aircraft that had been diverted to Batam earlier in the day have not yet landed at Sultan Thaha Airport in Jambi.
"The midday Garuda flight landed normally; it was the only one able to land. The two morning flights that were diverted have not yet been able to land," said Ardon.
