TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Ministry of Religious Affairs recorded that 725 out of 737 mosques and musallas (buildings used for Islamic prayer similar to mosques) affected by floods and landslides in the Aceh Province are now operational. Meanwhile, 12 other units are not yet functional due to severe damage or being swept away in the disaster.

Head of the Ministry of Religious Affairs' Aceh Regional Office Azhari stated that most of these buildings have been used by residents despite being in an emergency condition. "Based on verified data, 98 percent of the affected mosques and musallas have resumed functioning, albeit in an emergency condition," Azhari said, as quoted from a statement on the Ministry of Religious Affairs' official website on Saturday, February 7, 2026.

Azhari mentioned that most mosques and musallas in Aceh are operating in an emergency mode with the available resources. He mentioned that the places of worship that are not operational include Baitul Banian Serbajadi musalla in East Aceh Regency and At Taqarrub Riseh Teungoh mosque in North Aceh Regency, which were swept away by floodwater.

In addition, several musallas and mosques in Bener Meriah Regency and Gayo Lues Regency are not yet operable.

The government is providing assistance to renovate these buildings, whether the damage was severe, moderate, or light. "This assistance can be used to purchase water pumps if the water is not clean, generators, prayer mats, and other urgent needs," said Azhari.

He hopes that the restoration of mosques and musallas can be completed soon to allow affected residents to perform worship comfortably. "Especially as we are about to enter the holy month of Ramadan," Azhari said.

Flash floods and landslides hit three provinces in late 2025, affecting 52 regencies and cities in Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra.

A total of 18 regencies/cities in the Aceh Province were affected. As of Saturday, February 7, 2026—more than two months after the disaster—The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) recorded 562 deaths and 29 people still missing in Aceh. Over 74,000 residents are still displaced due to the disasters.

Not only that, the BNPB recorded that floods and landslides caused damage to 255,051 houses, 641 places of worship, 2,805 educational facilities, and 141 health facilities. Furthermore, the disaster also damaged 649 bridges and 1,648 roads in Aceh.
