TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Amnesty International Indonesia Executive Director Usman Hamid has urged President Prabowo Subianto and the House of Representatives (DPR) to establish a Fact-Finding Team (TPF) following the resignation of the Chief of the Indonesian Military’s (TNI) Strategic Intelligence Agency (BAIS), Major General Yudi Abrimantyo, over the acid attack on Andrie Yunus.
Usman suspects that the resignation, which was confirmed by a TNI spokesperson as an act of "political responsibility," carries political undertones. Consequently, Usman insists that this case must be held judicially accountable in a public court.
"Entering the second week since the strong acid attack on Andrie, the legal enforcement of this tragedy appears slow and peculiar. This is not due to technical or administrative hurdles, but rather political and non-judicial nuances," Usman said in a written statement on Thursday, March 26, 2026.
Usman’s conviction is well-founded. During the investigation, the police released the initials of two suspects, BHC and MAK, alongside the faces of the assailants who attacked Andrie. However, on March 18, the Central Military Police abruptly released the initials of four TNI members (NDP, SL, BHW, and ES), without clarifying the evidence obtained or explaining their respective roles.
"We are concerned that the police and the military are acting independently, leading to factual discrepancies. Therefore, the President needs to form a Fact-Finding Team involving law enforcement, civil society, and figures of high moral integrity," he said.
To ensure the TPF's effectiveness, Usman suggested that the DPR establish a team comprising members from Commissions I and III. Without the Parliament’s maximal involvement, he warned that the case is at risk of stalling. According to Usman, the formation of this TPF is urgent to ensure the investigation proceeds objectively and impartially.
"The state must process this case in a public court, not a military tribunal, in accordance with MPR Decree No. VII/2000 and the TNI Law, which mandates that soldiers committing common crimes must be subject to public courts," he stated.
Usman reminded that Andrie’s case is more than a mere attempted murder. He believes the attack is part of a systematic campaign of terror designed to silence critical voices and the constitutional rights of citizens to express their opinions.
Yesterday, TNI Headquarters confirmed that BAIS Chief Major General Yudi Abrimantyo had handed over his position. TNI Spokesperson Major General Aulia Dwi Nasrullah stated that the leadership change was a consequence of the acid attack against human rights activist Andrie Yunus.
"As a form of accountability, the handover of the BAIS Chief position was carried out today," Aulia Dwi Nasrullah said at TNI Headquarters in Cilangkap, East Jakarta, on Wednesday, March 25, 2026.
The two-star general did not provide further details regarding the replacement, nor did he disclose the identity of the senior officer taking Yudi’s place.
