TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) said Tropical Cyclone Narelle is expected to move away from Indonesian territory on Thursday-Friday, March 26-27, 2026. But indirect weather impacts remain present, with moderate to heavy rain forecast in Indonesian waters, alongside high waves.
BMKG weather forecaster Jumadil Syakir said moderate to heavy rain potential is present in Banten, Jakarta, West Java, Central Java, Yogyakarta, and East Java. Meanwhile, moderately high waves of 1.25-2.5 meters are expected in the waters south of East Java to East Nusa Tenggara, the southern Indian Ocean off East Java, southern Bali, southern West Nusa Tenggara, southern East Nusa Tenggara, Sawu Sea, and the western part of the Arafura Sea.
On Thursday, the center of Cyclone Narelle was located in the southern Indian Ocean off West Nusa Tenggara or about 1,110 kilometers south-southwest of Sabu. The cyclone moves southwest with a speed of 9 knots or 17 kilometers per hour. The strength of the cyclone or tropical storm is 85 knots or 155 kilometers per hour.
"Tropical Cyclone Narelle's maximum wind speed is predicted to strengthen into category 4 within the next 24 hours and move towards the southwest," said Jumadil in a written statement on Thursday.
Based on the intensity of its wind speed, tropical cyclones are categorized into six categories. Low category is 15-33 knots or 28-62 kilometers per hour, followed by category 1 (34-47 knots or 63-88 km/h), category 2 (48-63 knots or 89-117 km/h), category 3 (64-86 knots or 118-159 km/h), category 4 (87-107 knots or 160-199 km/h), and category 5 (more than 108 knots or 200 km/h or higher).
Tropical Cyclone Narelle developed from the tropical cyclone seed 96P, which reached tropical cyclone intensity on March 17, 2026 at 01:00 p.m. local time.
