TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Brazilian national team star Neymar is confirmed to be sidelined from playing for his club Santos after testing positive for Covid-19, the club announced in a statement quoted by several Brazilian media on Sunday, June 8.

The 33-year-old striker began showing symptoms last Thursday and was immediately removed from all team activities. Subsequent medical tests confirmed that Neymar was infected with the Sars Cov2 virus.

Neymar, who joined Santos in January, was reportedly in stable condition and is being carefully monitored at his home. This is the second time he has contracted the virus. He also tested positive while playing for Paris Saint-Germain in May 2021.

The club has not provided further details on the duration of the former Barcelona player's absence.

Neymar is confirmed to be absent from the match against Fortaleza next Thursday due to a prior playing ban.

The match against Fortaleza will be Santos' last match before the Brazilian League competition is suspended during the Club World Cup 2025, which will take place in the United States from June 14 to July 13.

Neymar's future at Santos is still undecided, considering his contract is set to expire on June 30. Throughout this season, Neymar's contribution has been limited due to injury, but he managed to make 12 appearances in all competitions, scoring three goals and providing three assists.
