TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Senator and Colombian presidential candidate Miguel Uribe Turbay became the target of a shooting during a campaign event in Fontibón district park, Bogotá, on Saturday, June 7, 2025. Sky News reported that a 15-year-old male has been arrested after Uribe was shot and critically injured.
Bogotá Mayor Carlos Galán stated that Uribe received emergency treatment immediately following the attack. Uribe suffered two gunshot wounds when an armed assailant shot him from behind, causing bleeding to his head, as seen in a video posted on social media where he was assisted by aides and people in the crowd.
He remains in critical condition at the Santa Fe Foundation hospital, undergoing neurosurgery and peripheral vascular procedures.
Widespread Condemnation
The Colombian Presidency strongly condemned the attack. Shocking videos and images on social media showed Uribe being shot while addressing a crowd. Startled bystanders fled the scene, and a man was subsequently detained on the ground by law enforcement officers.
Investigation
Quoted from a report by The Independent on Sunday, June 8, 2025, Colombian Defense Minister Pedro Sánchez stated that a suspect has been arrested in connection with the shooting. The investigation is currently underway to determine if there is any involvement of other individuals. Sánchez also mentioned visiting the hospital where Uribe is being treated.
The government has offered a reward of US$730,000 for information pertaining to the case. Colombian President Gustavo Petro stated, "For now there is nothing more than hypothesis," and added that failures in security protocols will also be investigated.
Party Statement
Miguel Uribe Turbay, a member of the opposition conservative Democratic Center party, is running for president in 2026. The party released a statement denouncing the assassination attempt as an unacceptable act of violence.
International Reactions
As reported by Al Jazeera, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio strongly condemned the assassination attempt on Uribe, blaming President Petro's provocative rhetoric for the violence.
Chilean President Gabriel Boric stated, "There is no room or justification for violence in a democracy."
Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa added, "We condemn all forms of violence and intolerance."
