1. Australia Issues Travel Advisory for Indonesia, Especially Bali
Australia has issued a travel advisory for its citizens vacationing in Bali. This warning follows a series of incidents that have occurred in popular destinations frequented by Australian tourists.
The Smartraveller website, an official platform of the Australian federal government, has published a directive for its citizens to adhere to the latest travel recommendations. "Australians have drowned in coastal areas, due to rough seas and strong rip currents at popular tourist beaches including in Bali. Many beaches are unpatrolled," the advisory stated last week, as reported by news.com.au.
2. 175 Indonesian Hajj Pilgrims Pass Away, Majority Due to Heart Disease
The Saudi Arabian Hajj Pilgrimage Organizing Officer (PPIH) recorded that 175 Indonesian hajj pilgrims died entering the 39th day of the hajj.
"Based on data from the Integrated Hajj Computerized System (Siskohat) Health, as of today, 175 Indonesian hajj pilgrims have died," explained Head of Health at PPIH Saudi Arabia Imran in Mecca, Sunday, June 8, 2025 as reported by the Ministry of Religion website.
Of that number, 170 were regular hajj pilgrims and five were special hajj pilgrims.
3. Extreme Poverty in Indonesia Rises to 15.42 Million
The World Bank has raised the international poverty line from US$2.15 per capita daily to US$3.00. This change caused the number of people living in extreme poverty in Indonesia to increase to 15.42 million in 2024, accounting for about 5.5 percent of the population. Meanwhile, if using the old poverty line, the number of Indonesians living below the extreme poverty line is as many as 3.56 million or about 1.26 percent.
The poverty line for lower-middle-income countries has also been revised from US$3.65 to US$4.20. The same goes for the poverty line for upper-middle-income countries, which has changed from US$6.85 to US$8.30.
