Colombian presidential hopeful Miguel Uribe was shot during a campaign event in Fontibon District Park, Bogota, on Saturday, June 7, 2025. A 15-year-old boy was arrested at the scene with a firearm, as quoted from Sky News. While receiving treatment at the hospital, Uribe underwent neurosurgical and peripheral vascular procedure.
Profile of Miguel Uribe Turbay
As quoted from The Economic Times, Miguel Uribe Turbay, 39, is a right-leaning senator from the opposition Centro Democratico party, founded by former president Alvaro Uribe, though the two are not related.
Miguel Uribe is the son of Diana Turbay, a journalist abducted by the Medellin cartel and killed in a failed rescue attempt in 1991, three days before her son's fifth birthday. His grandfather, Julio Cesar Turbay Ayala, served as the president of Colombia from 1978 to 1982.
Educated at Universidad de los Andes in Colombia and the Kennedy School at Harvard, Miguel Uribe has been a strong critic of President Gustavo Petro. Uribe announced his presidential candidacy for 2026 for the right-wing party in March.
Shooting Incident
The shooting targeting Uribe during the campaign is the first bloody event against a politician in the lead-up to the Colombian general election scheduled for May 31, 2026. "At this moment, Miguel is fighting for his life. We ask God to guide the hands of the doctors treating him," a written statement from Uribe's wife, Maria Claudia Tarazona, on her husband's X account on Saturday night.
Police arrested the underage shooter shortly after he fled the scene. "Whoever ordered this assassination… very clearly had the intention of throwing gas onto a fire, trying to be incendiary in an electoral context that is already deeply polarized," said Senior Analyst of Colombia at Crisis Group International, Elizabeth Dickinson, to NPR, on Sunday.
