TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Commission I of the House of Representatives (DPR), which oversees defense and foreign relations, has revealed that the government has never discussed the Board of Peace (BoP) membership fee with parliament.

Tb. Hasanuddin, a Commission I member from the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), stated that the most recent coordination meeting with the Ministry of Defense on January 26, 2026, focused solely on the ministry's 2025 performance and the 2026-2029 reinforcement plans for the Indonesian National Armed Forces.

"To date, there has been no official discussion between Commission I and the Ministry of Defense regarding the use of the defense budget to pay the BoP membership fee, which is reportedly around 1 billion US dollars," Hasanuddin said on Thursday, February 5, 2026.

Hasanuddin reminded that any use of the defense budget, particularly for large and strategic amounts, must be discussed openly and transparently through the DPR's supervision mechanism. He noted that the House holds a constitutional function to ensure every rupiah of the state budget is used appropriately, accountably, and in line with national interests.

"If there is a plan to use the defense budget for international purposes such as the BoP fee, it must be consulted and discussed together with the House of Representatives," he added.

Indonesia's decision to contribute to the Board of Peace was previously announced by Foreign Minister Sugiono. He stated that President Prabowo Subianto had approved a contribution of US$1 billion, or approximately Rp16.8 trillion.

According to Sugiono, the funds will be used to support recovery efforts in Gaza, Palestine. He denied the notion that this contribution is the membership fee for the Board of Peace.

"Therefore, the invited members are encouraged to participate in that," he said at the DPR complex in Jakarta on Tuesday, January 27, 2026.

Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa later clarified that the funding for this contribution will come from the state budget and be channeled through the Ministry of Defense. "Yes, it will always go through the Ministry of Defense, right? It will definitely go through the Ministry of Defense," Purbaya said after attending the Indonesia Economic Summit at the Shangri-La Hotel Jakarta on Tuesday, February 3, 2026.

He mentioned that the government will continue to apply cautious principles in budget management to avoid creating new fiscal pressures.

He stated that the government still has a number of options, including budget adjustments or reorientations if necessary. However, he emphasized that such measures will be taken in a measured manner while maintaining fiscal discipline.
