TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The President of Egypt, Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, urged United States President Donald Trump on Monday to "end the war in this region," as the second month of the joint Israel-U.S. attacks on Iran began.
El-Sisi made the statement in his speech at the ninth edition of the Egypt International Energy Conference and Exhibition (EGYPS 2026) in Cairo. The event took place from March 30 to April 1 amidst the global energy crisis caused by the ongoing conflict.
"I speak to you in the name of humanity and in the name of peace-loving people… Please help us stop the war. You are capable of doing so," el-Sisi said as quoted by Anadolu.
He warned of serious impacts on the countries in the region, stating that the crisis has led to energy shortages and price hikes, affecting fuel, fertilizers, and agricultural products.
El-Sisi also emphasized the importance of uniting efforts to end the war.
The Strait of Hormuz has been effectively disrupted since early March, with around 20 million barrels of oil passing through it daily, representing about 20 percent of the global supply. The closure of the strait has driven oil prices higher and raised concerns about prolonged economic disruption.
The region has been on alert since the U.S. and Israel launched airstrikes on Iran on February 28 without clear reasons. The attacks have resulted in the deaths of over 1,340 people to date, including the then Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Tehran has retaliated with drone and missile attacks targeting Israel, Jordan, Iraq, and the Gulf states hosting U.S. military assets, causing casualties and infrastructure damage and disrupting global markets and flights.
