TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Minister of Industry Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita said that the government targets the manufacturing sector to achieve net zero emissions by 2050. This target is 10 years earlier than the government's national commitment to the Paris Agreement, which is targeted to be achieved by 2060.
"We already have a roadmap, we already have pathways and strategies to realize net zero emissions in the entire manufacturing sector," he said at the opening of the Indonesia International Motor Show (IIMS) at JIExpo Kemayoran, Jakarta, on Thursday, February 5, 2026.
Agus said that one of the measures taken to achieve the net zero emission is by creating an eco-friendly electric vehicle ecosystem in the automotive industry. Electric vehicles are a strategic solution to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve air quality, especially in urban areas.
According to data from the Association of Indonesian Automotive Industries (Gaikindo), wholesale sales of electric vehicles increased from 43,194 units in 2024 to 103,931 units in 2025. Meanwhile, hybrid vehicle sales were up from 56,684 in 2024 to 65,323 units in 2025.
Furthermore, Agus mentioned that the sales of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles in 2024 were only 74 units, which then increased by 6,974 percent to 5,235 units throughout 2025.
"This trend indicates a significant shift towards more eco-friendly vehicles," he stated.
In terms of investment in electric vehicle battery production, the Ministry of Industry recorded a US$1.1 billion investment in battery cell factories from PT HLI Green Power, in addition to Rp935 billion worth investments from four foreign companies in battery packs.
