TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Indonesian Former Deputy Foreign Minister Dino Patti Djalal said President Prabowo Subianto is taking a realistic approach to Indonesia’s decision to join the U.S.-initiated Board of Peace, particularly in relation to efforts to end the conflict in Palestine.
Dino made the remarks after attending a closed-door meeting with Prabowo at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta on Wednesday afternoon, February 4, 2026. The meeting, which lasted around four hours, was attended by several former foreign ministers and deputy foreign ministers.
According to Dino, Indonesia’s participation in the Board of Peace is currently the only viable option being discussed to address ongoing violence in Palestine.
“There is no other option on the table. The reality is that the Board of Peace is part of the solution to stop repeated ceasefire violations by Israel,” he said at the Presidential Palace Complex on Wednesday evening.
Dino, who is chair and founder of the Foreign Policy Community of Indonesia (FPCI), described the Board of Peace as an experiment rather than a guaranteed solution. Initiated by U.S. President Donald Trump, the board, he said, is not a “magic formula that immediately cures all problems.”
He noted that Prabowo acknowledged the risks associated with joining the board, particularly Israel’s involvement. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is also a member of the Board of Peace, a factor Dino described as the greatest challenge.
According to Dino, Israel holds considerable influence over President Trump. However, he said Prabowo expressed confidence that Indonesia could maintain balance.
“He said, ‘We are confident we can balance it, because everything we do must be in harmony with Islamic countries,’” Dino said.
Prior to the meeting, Dino had publicly questioned Indonesia’s decision to join the Board of Peace. In a post on social media, he raised concerns about Indonesia’s rights and obligations as a member and urged Foreign Minister Sugiono to clarify whether the body guarantees the principle of equality among its members.
Dino also questioned whether there were safeguards to prevent the initiative from becoming a business-driven project in Gaza, potentially sidelining Palestinian rights.
“How do we ensure this does not turn into a real estate project for Trump or the international community, turning Palestine into an object rather than the rightful host in Gaza?” he said.
In addition, Dino called on the government to clarify how the Board of Peace would advance the two-state solution or Palestinian independence, noting that both Trump and Netanyahu have yet to demonstrate clear commitment to that goal.
Prabowo convened the meeting with former senior diplomats to gather input on Indonesia’s foreign policy stance.
Those in attendance included former foreign ministers Mohammad Marty Muliana Natalegawa (2009–2014), Retno Lestari Priansari Marsudi (2014–2024), Alwi Shihab (1999–2001), and Noer Hassan Wirajuda (2001–2009).
