TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Gibran Rakabuming Raka, Indonesia’s current vice president, is the leading candidate for vice president in early polls ahead of Indonesia’s 2029 presidential election, according to a survey by public policy and political consulting firm Indekstat.
He outperformed several prominent figures listed in the nationwide survey.
Saiful Muhjab, Head of Politics at Indekstat Indonesia, said the survey asked respondents: “If the presidential election were held today, who would you choose as vice president?”
“The results show that Gibran Rakabuming Raka leads with 21.1 percent electability,” Saiful said during a teleconference broadcast on the Indekstat YouTube channel on Thursday, February 12, 2026.
West Java Governor Dedi Mulyadi ranked second with 16.9 percent, followed by Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa at 11.5 percent. Democratic Party Chairman Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono (AHY) placed fourth with 6.6 percent, while former Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan came seventh at 4.3 percent. Former vice presidential candidate Mahfud Md. received 3.3 percent.
Former Commander of the Indonesian National Armed Forces Andika Perkasa ranked ninth with 2.4 percent, followed by former Central Java Governor Ganjar Pranowo at 2.3 percent, and former Jakarta Governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama (Ahok) at 1.9 percent.
Former Deputy Jakarta Governor Sandiaga Uno and PKB Chairman Muhaimin Iskandar both earned 1.7 percent, while PSSI Chairman Erick Thohir received 1.1 percent.
East Java Governor Khofifah Indar Parawansa ranked 14th with 0.6 percent, and Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung was 15th with 0.5 percent. The lower ranks included Maluku Governor Sherly Tjoanda (0.2 percent) and PKS politicians Salim Segaf Al Jufri and Almuzammil Yusuf (0.0 percent).
The survey was conducted from January 11-25, 2026, with 1,200 respondents from 38 provinces. Participants were Indonesian citizens aged 17 and older, eligible to vote in 2029.
Data was collected through face-to-face interviews using trained enumerators and a multistage random sampling method, with a margin of error of approximately 2.9 percent.
Indekstat’s findings contrast with a previous survey by IndexPolitica Indonesia released on October 29, 2025. In that poll, Gibran was fourth among vice presidential candidates with 12.35 percent, trailing Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa (28.65 percent), Dedi Mulyadi (20.15 percent), and AHY (15.75 percent). Erick Thohir and Pramono Anung followed with 5.14 percent and 3.30 percent, respectively.
