TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The technology giant Google has stated that the increased use of generative adversarial networks (GenAI) has led to the rise of AI-based content, spam, and misinformation created using this technology. To address this, the company relies on a combination of security systems, abuse detection technology, and AI content labeling.
Vice President Southeast Asia and South Asia Frontier Google, Sapna Chadha, stated that Google views innovation and security as two inseparable factors. "For years, we have applied this principle across all Google products, including Search," said Sapna during the virtual launch of the inaugural report "Gemini Report: Southeast Asia 2026" on Tuesday, July 14, 2026.
Sapna explained that Google has invested in trust, safety, and technology engineering systems to handle spam and various forms of abuse, whether by humans or using AI. This experience has then been applied in the development of Gemini.
"We have the ability to recognize harmful activities, system abuse, and repeatedly copied content attempting to outsmart the system," she added. This capability, according to Sapna, has also been applied to Gemini.
In addition, Google has developed a watermarking technology called SynthID by DeepMind for image and video creation products. This technology is designed to label AI-generated content so that it can be more easily recognized by other systems and technologies.
"This technology ensures that content is accurately labeled as AI-generated so that other systems and technologies can recognize and handle the increasing complexity more effectively," she said.
According to Sapna, the combination of technology and experience that Google has built over the years is the company's asset in facing the challenges of AI abuse.
It's worth noting that Google has just released the inaugural report "Gemini Report: Southeast Asia 2026," which shows that the number of active users of the Gemini app in Southeast Asia has more than doubled in the past 12 months. The company also mentioned that the growth rate of Gemini in the region is the fastest compared to the launch of other Google apps.
The report, which analyzed the usage patterns of Gemini in Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam, also noted Indonesia as one of the countries where the Gemini AI assistant is most sought after, as the use of AI for work, learning, creativity, and daily activities continues to increase.
