TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Meta has updated its software in an attempt to close a loophole that allowed users to record while their smart glasses' indicator light was covered, using the smart glasses to secretly record others.
Meta's Vice President of AR, Alex Himel, stated in a Threads post that the smart glasses' camera was designed not to start recording if the LED light was blocked, but some people tried to circumvent this by starting recording and then covering the light.
"A fix for this is starting to roll out – the camera will now stop working if the light is covered during a recording," he said, as quoted from an Engadget report on Thursday, August 27.
After the software update, the camera on Meta's smart glasses will automatically stop recording if the system detects the indicator light is covered while recording.
To address privacy and unauthorized recording concerns, Meta previously stated that the camera on its smart glasses will be disabled if the device detects the recording indicator light has been tampered with.
Meta has faced scrutiny regarding the use of its smart glasses to record or harass others in public without their knowledge.
Several Instagram accounts known to share videos secretly recorded using the smart glasses have been blocked.
However, the company hasn't succeeded in stopping all the tactics used by users to secretly record others.
Furthermore, there are inexpensive accessories that can be used to circumvent the recording indicator light without detection.
Himel hinted that Meta is still developing additional security features for its smart glasses.
He said the company will continue to roll out updates to ensure the recording indicator light reliably notifies people nearby when a photo or video is being captured for the user's gallery.
"Only a tiny minority of people try to get around these protections, and the fact they have to go to these lengths shows our efforts are working," he said.
