TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Prabowo Subianto called on Nobel laureates to collaborate with Indonesian researchers and academics to strengthen the national research ecosystem and develop scientific talent.

The Head of the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), Arif Satria, stated that Prabowo conveyed this when receiving Timor-Leste President José Ramos-Horta and several Nobel laureates at the State Palace in Jakarta on Friday.

"The President also told the Nobel laureates to collaborate with researchers and academics in Indonesia," Arif said after the meeting.

According to Arif, President Prabowo believes that Nobel laureates have a significant role in inspiring and bolstering the research talent ecosystem in Indonesia.

He said Prabowo hopes to realize the collaboration between Nobel laureates and Indonesian researchers and academics soon.

Arif mentioned that BRIN has worked with several Nobel laureates, including Japanese Nobel laureate in Chemistry, Susumu Kitagawa, in the development of Metal Organic Framework (MOF) technology for natural gas utilization in Indonesia.

According to Arif, Kitagawa has established a partner laboratory in Indonesia that is currently preparing to develop technology to produce natural gas at lower pressures using these findings.

During the meeting, Prabowo also emphasized the Good Neighbor Policy as one of the government's priorities for maintaining and strengthening relations with neighboring countries.

Arif said this policy includes strengthening cooperation with ASEAN and Southeast Asian countries, including in the fields of science and technology.

In addition to science and technology cooperation, Prabowo presented several strategic Indonesian programs to the Nobel laureates, including food security, the implementation of the free nutritious meal program, the development of fishing villages, and conservation efforts.

Arif stated that President Prabowo is committed to ramping up the protection of Indonesia's flora and fauna.

This was conveyed after the Nobel laureates previously visited a conservation area in Lampung to see firsthand the richness of Indonesia's flora and fauna.

Several Nobel laureates present at the meeting included Frances H. Arnold and Benjamin List, Nobel Prize winners in Chemistry; Kailash Satyarthi, Nobel Peace Prize winner; and Tim Hunt, Nobel Prize winner in Physiology or Medicine.

Also present were Robert C. Merton and James A. Robinson, Nobel Prize winners in Economic Sciences; and Konstantin Novoselov and Brian P. Schmidt, Nobel Prize winners in Physics. In addition, Nobel Prize winner Sara Seager was also present.
