TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Hundreds of demonstrators gathered in Tel Aviv and several other Israeli cities on Saturday to protest the war with Iran.

According to CNA, the weekly protests against the war launched by Israel and the United States against Iran on February 28 have been held in Tel Aviv and other major cities, though they were initially attended by only a few dozen people.

The number of participants appears to have grown in recent weeks, although it remains far below the tens of thousands who filled the streets of Tel Aviv last year to protest Israel’s war in Gaza.

Several former members of parliament and prominent left-wing groups joined Saturday’s demonstrations, including Standing Together, Peace Now, and Women Wage Peace.

Videos circulating online showed law enforcement officers dispersing protesters in Tel Aviv. Similar scenes were also recorded by activists in the northern city of Haifa.

Ban on Gatherings of More Than 50 People

Under wartime security regulations, gatherings of more than 50 people are banned in Israel as the country faces daily missile and rocket attacks from Iran and Lebanon.

A spokesperson for one of the organizing groups said the protests had not been officially authorized.

In Tel Aviv, journalists reported that security forces forcibly pushed back some demonstrators, causing several to fall to the ground, with some piling on top of one another. At least one protester was reportedly choked.

One journalist said at least four people were detained.

Israeli police said the “illegal demonstration” in Tel Aviv was dispersed after representatives from the Home Front Command clarified that such gatherings were prohibited under emergency regulations.

Police said 13 people were arrested in Tel Aviv.

Another five people were arrested in Haifa, where “rioters began blocking the road and did not comply with the officers’ instructions,” police said.

Standing Together, a Jewish-Arab activist group involved in organizing the protests, said in a statement that police had been “instructed to carry out arrests and silence dissent,” adding that “the government fears the expansion of the protest movement.”

Despite the demonstrations, public support for the war against Iran remains high in Israel.

A poll published on Friday by the Israel Democracy Institute found that 78 percent of Jewish Israelis support the war, compared with only 19 percent among Arab Israelis.

However, the share of those opposing the war has risen from 4 percent in early March to 11.5 percent, according to the institute.
