TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The global internet governance forum organized by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) has been officially relocated from Muscat, Oman, to Nusa Dua, Bali.
The ICANN87 Annual General Meeting (AGM) is scheduled to take place on October 17–22, 2026.
The relocation was decided due to escalating conflict in the Middle East, which raised security concerns for prospective participants. To ensure safety and maintain participation levels, ICANN selected Bali as the alternative host city.
The decision was reached during a closed-door meeting between ICANN officials and an Indonesian delegation comprising the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs (Komdigi) and the Indonesian Domain Name Administrator (PANDI). The meeting was held on the sidelines of ICANN86 in Seville, Spain, on Tuesday, June 9, 2026, local time.
ICANN was represented by Vice President Samiran Gupta, alongside Asia Pacific Stakeholder Engagement Manager Athena Foo and Maya. The Indonesian delegation was led by PANDI Supervisory Board Chair Hammam Riza, PANDI Chair Isnawan Aslam, and Teguh Arifiyadi, Director of Digital Space Supervision at Komdigi.
“We ask PANDI, especially under its new management, to prepare and work closely with ICANN to ensure the success of ICANN87 in Bali,” Samiran Gupta said during the meeting.
The Indonesian government welcomed the decision. Teguh Arifiyadi said he would report the mandate to Communication and Digital Affairs Minister Meutya Hafid.
“Komdigi, together with PANDI as co-host, is ready to ensure the success of this major event with support from local partners and Indonesia’s internet community,” he said.
PANDI Supervisory Board Chair Hammam Riza expressed confidence that preparations can be completed despite limited time.
“Together with the new PANDI management and full support from Komdigi, we will work hand in hand to ensure the success of ICANN87 in Bali,” he said.
Indonesia’s representative to ICANN’s Governmental Advisory Committee (GAC), Ashwin Sasongko Sastrosubroto, also welcomed the development. The former Komdigi director general, now with BRIN, said the AGM is ICANN’s most important annual meeting as it reflects the multistakeholder model of internet governance.
“This is a forum where stakeholders can discuss a wide range of issues, from introductions to internet technology challenges,” he said.
He added that one of the key sessions is the Open Forum, where the ICANN Board directly receives input from global stakeholders.
The ICANN AGM is the organization’s flagship annual event overseeing the Domain Name System (DNS) and IP address allocation—the core infrastructure of the global internet. The Bali meeting is expected to draw at least 1,500 participants from around 150 countries.
